Workshop: Painting Images With Dyes

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Instructor: Hollis Chatelain

NOTE: This is a one-day workshop that is offered twice, not a 2-day workshop.

This workshop is designed to teach students how to paint with Procion dyes on cotton. Learning to control the dyes will be emphasized. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding while using no resists. All of these techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a scarf. Each student is asked to bring two or three 18"x 20" designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can be as simple as drawings from a coloring book because we will mainly be concentrating on how to apply the dyes. Students will leave with a painted piece that could be worked into a vest, quilt or pillow top.

You will learn to use an appliqué technique so new and revolutionary, you will use nothing else once you try it. It is easy, foolproof and the results are always amazing. This technique leaves the quilt and fabric soft and manageable, not stiff and boardlike, as fusible webs and glues do. You can do raw edge appliqué without any fraying edges! This technique produces a no-fray raw edge appliqué as a result. There are over a dozen patterns to choose from and the fee includes the pattern and the Heat-Set product.

All fabric pieces start as squares or rectangles, so they are easily and quickly cut from strips. This method uses no templates, no paper or foundation piecing, and there is no bias on the outer edge of the blocks. Students choose from multiple variations.
